Find Freedom from Unforgiveness: Transform Your Mind, Transform Your Life

Discover the transformative power of forgiveness with Katharine Giovanni. Learn how to free your mind, release negativity, and embrace joy.

Introduction

Forgiveness is a deeply personal and often challenging journey. We hear all the time that we need to forgive—our pastors, parents, and teachers tell us so. But rarely are we taught how to forgive. In this conversation on The Daring Well Podcast, guest Katharine Giovanni, a forgiveness coach and author, breaks down the true meaning of forgiveness and how to achieve it.

The Journey to Forgiveness

Katharine's personal journey to forgiveness began in her childhood.  Her turning point came when she realized that carrying anger and resentment was weighing her down. Through years of practice and research, she developed a method to help others navigate their own forgiveness journey.

What Forgiveness Isn’t

One of the biggest misconceptions about forgiveness is that it means excusing someone's actions or allowing them back into your life. Katharine emphasizes that forgiveness does not mean repair. You do not have to rebuild relationships with people who have hurt you. Rather, forgiveness is about removing them from your mental space so you can move forward freely.

The Science of Holding On

Unforgiveness affects more than just our emotions—it has a tangible impact on our physical well-being. Katharine references Dr. Masaru Emoto's Japanese Water Study, which found that words and emotions can alter the molecular structure of water. Given that our bodies are mostly water, negative emotions can have a toxic effect on us physically. This is why forgiveness isn’t just an emotional practice; it’s a crucial part of our holistic health.

Steps to Forgiveness

Katharine’s method involves a step-by-step approach:

  1. Make a List – Write down the names of people you need to forgive, from past to present. Assign each one a level from 1 to 10, with 1 being easy to forgive and 10 being the most difficult.
  2. Start Small – Begin with the ones and twos. Say out loud: I completely forgive [name]. I forgive the energy around them. I completely forgive myself.
  3. Check In – Notice how your body feels. Do you still feel anger? If so, repeat the process.
  4. Work Your Way Up – Over time, move toward the more difficult ones, forgiving the energy around people and situations before addressing the individuals directly.
  5. Forgive Objects and Situations – You can even forgive a location, an event, or an object that holds negative memories.

The Roadblocks to Forgiveness

Many people fear that forgiving means giving in or excusing someone’s actions. Others struggle with anger, resentment, or fear of rejection. Katharine reminds us that forgiveness is selfish in the best way—it’s about freeing yourself, not making the other person feel better.

How Do You Know You’ve Forgiven?

A true test of forgiveness is when you see the person’s name or think about the situation and feel nothing. There is no emotional charge. You no longer replay the events in your head or feel anger rise within you.

The Life-Changing Effects of Forgiveness

When you let go of anger and resentment, you make room for joy. Forgiveness lightens the emotional load, allowing you to be more present, creative, and open to new opportunities. It also transforms your relationships, bringing new, positive energy into your life while letting go of toxic influences.

Conclusion: Choosing Joy

Forgiveness is an ongoing practice, not a one-time event. Katharine encourages us to embrace joy now rather than postponing happiness for future milestones. Life is too short to carry unnecessary burdens. Start small, be patient with yourself, and choose to live in peace and freedom.
