Movement, self-love, and wellness go hand in hand. Learn why loving yourself is the foundation of confidence and success with Kat Anselmo
Inspired by The Daring Well Podcast Conversation with Kat Ansalmo
When life forces us into seasons of uncertainty, it’s often the smallest steps that lead to the biggest inner transformations. In a recent episode of The Daring Well Podcast, I had the joy of speaking with Kat Ansalmo, a health coach, yoga teacher, and wellness guide whose journey of healing began long before she stepped into her professional calling. Her story is a powerful reminder that balance isn’t something we find—it’s something we slowly build through intention, movement, reflection, and self-love.
In this blog post, we explore Kat’s inspiring path, the mindset shifts she teaches, and the practical strategies anyone can begin using today to create a healthier and more grounded life.
Kat’s story began during a season of personal crisis. Years ago, her then-boyfriend became suddenly ill, and traditional medical solutions weren’t providing relief. Out of desperation, they turned to the internet—“Dr. Google,” as she jokes—and discovered yoga and meditation. These practices brought light back into his life again. He wasn’t instantly cured, but he became alive again.
Watching his transformation planted a seed in Kat, one that would grow even stronger after the two eventually separated. She found herself in a dark, lonely place—lost, disconnected, and unsure of who she was. That difficult season became her turning point. She asked herself the two questions that changed everything:
Who do I want to be?
And what do I need to become that person?
Those simple but profound questions became her compass toward rebuilding a meaningful and aligned life.
Kat is honest about the fact that she didn’t like yoga or meditation at first. She didn't consider herself spiritual, didn’t enjoy sitting still, and even skipped final relaxation in classes because she couldn’t see the point. But after seeing how movement helped her boyfriend, she knew she needed to try something different.
So she started small—10 minutes a day.
She committed to one year of intentional movement, reflection, and tiny habits that added up over time. What she discovered is something she teaches her clients today:
When people feel lost or disconnected from purpose, Kat encourages them to begin with movement. Even 10 minutes a day can shift energy, boost confidence, and signal to your body and mind: I am showing up for myself.
This simple shift often becomes the foundation for change in every other area of life.
When asked how self-love impacts true success—whether in career, relationships, or personal goals—Kat offers a powerful insight:
“The most important relationship you have is the one with yourself.”
If we don’t love or respect ourselves, it becomes nearly impossible to make aligned choices, maintain healthy relationships, or feel fulfilled even when life looks successful from the outside. Many people know their friends better than they know themselves. They can advise others with wisdom but feel confused about their own desires or needs.
Self-love, Kat explains, is the foundation for:
Without inner clarity, outward success often feels empty. But when you truly know yourself, everything else becomes more aligned.
One of the most fascinating parts of Kat’s journey is her creation of what she calls The Book of Life—a personalized, living document that acts as a roadmap for inner success.
She created it during her year of transformation as a way to stay anchored when life felt chaotic or distracting. In a world full of noise—notifications, multitasking, constant comparison—a personal guidebook becomes a grounding force.
Kat’s Book of Life includes:
She revisits and updates the book every year, treating it like a living, evolving document that grows as she grows. Not only is it a tool for direction, but one day she hopes to pass it down to future generations—a written legacy of wisdom and inner work.
Each piece creates a holistic, personalized map for emotional stability, clarity, and direction.
When it comes to building inner strength, Kat emphasizes starting with the practices that reconnect you with yourself. These tools aren’t just nice ideas—they create the mental shifts required for long-term change.
Meditation is one practice Kat resisted for a long time because sitting with herself felt uncomfortable. Like many beginners, she couldn’t sit still and needed a timer just to get through three minutes. But she kept showing up.
Eventually, three minutes became ten, and ten became twenty. Meditation taught her to observe her thoughts, regulate her emotions, and experience her own presence. Today, it’s one of her core practices for mental clarity and inner peace.
Kat stresses that affirmations are powerful not because they create instant change, but because they counteract the constant flow of negative thoughts. You cannot think a negative thought and speak a positive affirmation at the same time. With repetition, affirmations begin to shift your beliefs, much like building muscle through consistent workouts.
Movement is both a physical and emotional practice. When you move your body, you send a signal to your brain that you matter. Small wins build evidence—and evidence builds confidence.
Kat believes nature is profoundly healing—walking, fresh air, ocean views, or quiet green spaces help release stress stored in the body. Even a short outdoor break can reset your mind.
Wellness, Kat says, isn’t just hard work or discipline. It’s also joy—massages, sauna time, spa rituals, or simple acts of pampering give the body space to exhale and recover.
Humans are wired for connection. Spending time with people who inspire you, support your growth, and reflect your worth is essential for emotional wellbeing.
Kat uses journaling to make her mental world visible on paper. One of her favorite practices is writing negative thoughts on small slips of paper and putting them into a jar. Seeing the accumulation helps you become aware of your thinking patterns and disrupt them.
One of Kat’s most charming habits is collecting stones during her morning beach runs. She didn’t like running, but she loved the feeling of accomplishment afterward. So each time she ran, she picked up a stone as proof that she showed up.
Eventually, those stones decorated her balcony—an everyday visual reminder of her resilience, commitment, and growth.
This simple ritual teaches a powerful lesson:
Our brains need evidence to build motivation.
Tiny rituals help us remember who we’re becoming and why we keep going.
The first step, Kat believes, is not perfection—it’s simply beginning. If life feels overwhelming, confusing, or unbalanced, the most healing thing you can do is take one small step toward yourself.
That might look like:
Change begins when you choose yourself, even in the smallest ways.
